US Lacks Comprehensive Internet Privacy Law To Protect Consumer Data - Watchdog

The United States lacks any comprehensive legislation to regulate the collection and sale of consumers' data by private companies and needs stronger laws to protect individuals, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) said in a report on Wednesday

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 13th February, 2019) The United States lacks any comprehensive legislation to regulate the collection and sale of consumers' data by private companies and needs stronger laws to protect individuals, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) said in a report on Wednesday.

"We found that there is no comprehensive US internet privacy law governing private companies' collection, use, or sale of users' data," the report said. "Consumer advocates and others told us greater regulatory powers are needed... We recommended that Congress consider developing comprehensive Internet privacy legislation to better protect consumers."

In April 2018, Facebook said that up to 87 million users' personal data may have been improperly disclosed. This was one of many recent Internet privacy incidents, the GAO noted.

However, most industry representatives interviewed for the report favored the current enforcement approach and warned that regulations could hinder innovation, the report said.
