Brazil Extends Military Police Deployment at Venezuela Border Amid Exodus

Brazil extended the deployment of military police at the northern border with Venezuela for two months on Wednesday over deteriorating public security

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 13th February, 2019) Brazil extended the deployment of military police at the northern border with Venezuela for two months on Wednesday over deteriorating public security.

"The Federal government has extended for 60 days the deployment of the National Public Security Force in the state of Roraima to aid local forces amid a public security crisis," it said in a statement.

The security personnel will remain at the border to control the entry of Venezuelan refugees seeking a better life in Brazil. Their exodus has put a strain on the nation's penitentiary system.

The measure takes effect on February 27 when the previous order expires. It was agreed last August when 120 personnel were deployed to Roraima. Then-President Michel Temer adopted a series of initiatives that allowed sending in troops to protect infrastructure and help out at refugee centers.
