Albania, Montenegro, Norway, Ukraine Join EU Sanctions Over Elections in Donbas -Statement

Albania, Montenegro, Norway and Ukraine joined on Tuesday the European Union's sanctions on a list of individuals and entities over the elections in the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk people's republics (DPR and LPR), the Council of the European Union said in a statement

BRUSSELS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 12th February, 2019) Albania, Montenegro, Norway and Ukraine joined on Tuesday the European Union's sanctions on a list of individuals and entities over the elections in the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk people's republics (DPR and LPR), the Council of the European Union said in a statement.

"The Candidate Countries Montenegro and Albania*, and the EFTA [European Free Trade Association] country Norway, member of the European Economic Area, as well as Ukraine, align themselves with this declaration," the Council of the European Union said, referring to the decision on imposition of sanctions from December 2018.

The elections of the heads and members of the parliaments of the self-proclaimed republics in Donbas were held on November 11. Kiev did not recognize the elections while Western states, including the European Union, also dubbed them illegitimate.

Russia, in its turn, has noted that the elections in Donbas do not contradict the Minsk accords and pointed to the fact that Ukraine has yet to fulfill its commitments under the peace deal.

Head of the DPR Central Election Commission Olga Pozdnyakova, who has been placed on the EU sanctions list, told Sputnik in December the bloc's restrictive measures would not have any impact on the future of the self-proclaimed republic.
