CARACAS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 11th February, 2019) More than 100,000 Venezuelan citizens have registered as volunteers over the past 24 hours for distributing foreign humanitarian aid in the country, Venezuela's self-declared interim president Juan Guaido said on Monday."In just 24 hours, more than 100,000 Venezuelans signed up as volunteers to help getting humanitarian aid. Organization and mobilization are a key to ensuring that aid is delivered and usurpation of power is stopped," Guaido wrote on Twitter.
Last week, the Venezuelan opposition announced its plans to hold an international conference for attracting humanitarian aid to Venezuela in Washington on February 14. Guaido announced setting up three centers for the collection of humanitarian aid in the Colombian city of Cucuta, Brazil and at an undisclosed island in the Caribbean.
The US Department of State said on Sunday that the first batch of humanitarian assistance for Venezuela was delivered to the center in Cucuta.
Tensions in Venezuela escalated when Guaido, the head of the opposition-led parliament, declared himself interim president on January 23, disputing last year's re-election of incumbent President Nicolas Maduro. Guaido's declaration was almost immediately recognized by the United States and some of its allies. Russia, China, Mexico, Turkey and Uruguay have said that they consider Maduro to be Venezuela's legitimate president.
