Russian Seismologists Register Magnitude 4.7 Earthquake Off Coast Of Kunashir Island

YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 09th February, 2019) SAKHALINSK, February 9 (Sputnik) - A magnitude 4.7 earthquake was registered off the coast of the island of Kunashir, part of the South Kuril Islands archipelago, on Saturday, the Sakhalin Region branch of the Geophysical Survey of the Russian academy of Sciences (GS RAS) told Sputnik.

"A 4.7-magnitude earthquake was registered on Saturday at 01:24 p.m.[02:24 GMT] in the Pacific Ocean near the Kurils. The epicenter is located ... 30 kilometers [18.6 miles] away from the city of Yuzhno-Kurilsk," Elena Semyonova, the head of the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk seismological station, said.

The focus of the earthquake was located at the depth of 117 kilometers.

Semyonova said tremors of a magnitude of up to three points could be felt on the islands of Kunashir and Shikotan.

Meanwhile, the US Geological Survey that a magnitude of the earthquake was 5.

There have been no immediate reports about damage or casualties caused by the earthquake.
