Pompeo Seeks Tougher Int'l Restrictions on Iran's Missile Program After Satellite Launch

US State Secretary Mike Pompeo on Friday stressed the need to impose stricter international restrictions to hinder the development of Iran's missile program and slammed the Iran nuclear accord as ineffective

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 08th February, 2019) US State Secretary Mike Pompeo on Friday stressed the need to impose stricter international restrictions to hinder the development of Iran's missile program and slammed the Iran nuclear accord as ineffective.

On Thursday, Iran's Deputy Defense Minister Ghasem Taghizadeh said that the country had successfully launched the Dusti (Friendship) satellite this week following failed attempt to put another satellite into orbit in January. Taghizadeh also said Iran intended to launch another satellite, the Tolou (Sunrise), soon.

"Iran's latest missile launch again proves the Iran deal is doing nothing to stop Iran's missile program. Iran is defying the UN Security Council as it advances its ballistic missile capabilities. We must restore tougher international restrictions to deter Iran's missile program," Pompeo said on Twitter.

The United States and a number of other countries interpret the provisions of the UN Resolution 2231 as saying that Iran is banned from undertaking any activity related to ballistic missiles, designed to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons, including launches. Russia, however, stresses that the resolution only "calls upon" Tehran not to undertake such an activity.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry, on its part, has said that the launches do not violate the given resolution.
