US Senators Urge Pelosi to Invite Taiwan President to Address Joint Session - Letter

Several US senators are urging House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to invite Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-Wen to address a joint session of Congress, according to a letter published on Thursday

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 07th February, 2019) Several US senators are urging House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to invite Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-Wen to address a joint session of Congress, according to a letter published on Thursday.

"This invitation would be consistent with US law, enhance US leadership in the Indo-Pacific region, and justly reward a true friend and ally of the United States and the American people," Republican Senators Cory Gardner, Marco Rubio, Tom Cotton, John Cornyn and Ted Cruz said in the letter.

The lawmakers praised the Taiwanese president, calling him "a genuine democratic leader" who is engaged in what they called a "struggle against an authoritarian and oppressive system."

The United States, along with many other countries, does not recognize Taiwan as a sovereign nation and officially sticks to the "One China" policy. Despite this, Washington has kept informal relations with Taiwan and has infuriated Beijing by approving arms sales to the island.

In 1949, after the proclamation of the People's Republic of China (PRC) and being defeated by Mao Zedong's Communist forces, Chiang Kai-shek and the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) moved the Republic of China (ROC) to Taiwan. Since then, Beijing has viewed the self-ruled island as a breakaway province.
