WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 07th February, 2019) US Special Envoy for Venezuela Elliott Abrams has been asked to testify before Congress next Tuesday, February 12, the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee announced in a press release on Wednesday.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo appointed Abrams to the position in late January.

Abrams was a prominent proponent of US interventionism in Latin America to prevent the spread of left-wing governments in the 1980s and was appointed Assistant Secretary of State for Human rights and then Assistant Secretary for Inter-American Affairs by then President Ronald Reagan.

In this role, Abrams became a lobbyist and unofficial spokesman for militias formed with US support in Central America, including Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala, and worked to cover up or discredit US media investigations of the suspected crimes committed by these groups.
