Mike Pompeo Says Venezuela's Military Blocking Humanitarian Aid With Trucks, Tankers

Venezuela's military is using trucks and shipping tankers to prevent humanitarian assistance from being delivered to the country, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement on Wednesday

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 06th February, 2019) Venezuela's military is using trucks and shipping tankers to prevent humanitarian assistance from being delivered to the country, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement on Wednesday.

"The Venezuelan people desperately need humanitarian aid," Pompeo said via Twitter. "The US and other countries are trying to help, but Venezuela's military under [Venezuelan President Nicolas] Maduro's orders is blocking aid with trucks and shipping tankers."

Maduro must allow the humanitarian aid to reach the starving people of Venezuela, Pompeo added.

Tensions in Venezuela escalated nearly two weeks ago when opposition leader Juan Guaido declared himself interim president, disputing last year's re-election of incumbent leader Maduro. Guaido was immediately recognized by the United States and several other countries.

Russia, China, Mexico, Turkey and Uruguay were among those that have voiced their support for Maduro as the country's legitimately elected president.

On Sunday, US President Donald Trump confirmed in an interview with the CBS broadcaster that US military intervention in Venezuela was an option.
