WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 06th February, 2019) The United States will perform a well-coordinated withdrawal of its troops from Syria while continuing the fight against the Islamic State terror group (outlawed in Russia), US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Wednesday."The drawdown will be well-coordinated and our policy priorities in Syria have remained unchanged," Pompeo said during his opening remarks at a meeting of the Global Coalition to Defeat the Islamic State in Washington, DC.
Pompeo noted that President Donald Trump's December announcement that US troops will be withdrawn from Syria is not the end of America's fight.
"The fight is one that we will continue to wage alongside of you," Pompeo said. "The drawdown of troops is essentially a tactical change. It is not a change in the mission. ... It simply represents a new stage in an old fight."
The United States will count on its coalition partners and allies to permanently defeat the Islamic State, Pompeo added.
In December, Trump announced the pullout of US troops from Syria, but gave no timeline for their withdrawal.
During Tuesday's State of the Union address to Congress, Trump said it is time to bring US troops deployed in Syria back home.
