Punjab government reacts to Aleem Khan’s detention

Fayyaz ul Hassan Chohan says Aleem Khan has only been taken into custody, no reference has been filed against him

Islamabad (Pakistan Point News – 6th February, 2019) Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf PTI leader and senior Punjab minister Aleem Khan was taken into National Accountability Bureau (NAB) custody on Wednesday.

Reacting on this, Punjab Information Minister Fayyaz ul Hassan Chohan said Aleem Khan is neither an accused nor a convict but still he has been taken into custody.

The provincial information minister said that Aleem Khan has appeared before NAB twice in six months.

He further said that Aleem Khan has only been taken into custody. No reference has been filed against him, he added.

He termed the behaviour of the opposition ridiculous, adding that Shehbaz Sharif has been appointed Public Accounts Committee (PAC) despite references against him.

The PTI leader was arrested as he had arrived in the NAB’s Lahore office for the fourth time on Wednesday. Aleem Khan was accused of possessing offshore companies and having assets beyond known sources of income.

Aleem Khan was reportedly unable to satisfy NAB regarding his source of income for his properties in Dubai and London. The NAB asked 18 questions from the senior minister but he could only respond to three of them.

He was then taken into custody from NAB premises.

He had last appeared before NAB on August 10.

The provincial minister and one of the top lieutenants of the ruling party in Punjab, will be presented before an accountability court on Thursday, read a statement from NAB following his detention.

A joint investigative team of NAB will interrogate Aleem Khan.

The PTI leader was elected as a member of Punjab Assembly from Lahore. He was serving as the provincial minister for local government and community development.

According to family sources, the PTI minister has sent his resignation as the local government minister to Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar upon his arrest.
