Egyptian Parliament to Consider Amendments to Constitution to Increase Presidential Term

The Egyptian Parliament will consider a series of draft amendments to the country's 2014 constitution, including those relating to a longer presidential term, the parliament's general affairs committee said on Tuesday

CAIRO (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 05th February, 2019) The Egyptian Parliament will consider a series of draft amendments to the country's 2014 constitution, including those relating to a longer presidential term, the parliament's general affairs committee said on Tuesday.

Lawmakers of the pro-government Support Egypt coalition prepared proposals for changing the country's constitution, which provide for an increase in the presidential term from four to six years. In addition, it is proposed to again create the upper house of parliament, which existed before the revolution of 2011. It is also planned to allow the head of state to appoint a vice president.

The project also provides for "strengthening the role of the armed forces" and envisages the need to seek approval of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces when appointing the defense minister.

The lawmakers will also consider introducing 25-percent quota for representation of different social groups, including women, workers and peasants, youth, representatives of the Christian community and people with disabilities, in the parliament.

According to the current constitution of Egypt adopted in 2014, either the president or a group of lawmakers representing at least one fifth of the parliament can initiate changes to the country's basic law. Any changes to the constitution of Egypt must be approved in a national referendum after two-thirds of the lawmakers vote for it.
