BERLIN (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 05th February, 2019) German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said ahead of his trip to Washington on Tuesday he wanted more clarity on how to avoid security vacuum in Syria after US troop withdrawal."We still do not have clarity in Syria about how a vacuum can be prevented after the announced withdrawal of the US troops, allowing old conflicts to escalate and the Islamic State [IS, terrorist group banned in Russia] to gain a foothold once again. I hope that the talks in Washington will provide more information on this," he was quoted as saying by the Foreign Office.
The US capital is preparing to host on Wednesday a meeting of foreign ministers from 79 member states of the US-led coalition fighting the IS in Syria and Iraq.
Maas praised the coalition for degrading the IS in most of Syria and Iraq but warned the terror threat had not been entirely eliminated. He said the coalition would continue efforts to "permanently dry up" support for the militants.
