Intra-Afghan Talks in Moscow to Shed Light on US-Taliban Deal in Qatar - Afghan Diaspora

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 05th February, 2019) Ongoing intra-Afghan talks in Moscow will provide clarity on the agreement reached between the United States and the Taliban movement in Qatar, Ghulam Muhammad Jalal, the president of the center of the Afghan diaspora in Russia, which helped organize the conference, said Tuesday.

In January, US Special Envoy Zalmay Khalilzad said in an interview with The New York Times that US and Taliban officials during talks in Doha had agreed in principle on the framework of an agreement. Under the deal, the Taliban agreed to "do what is necessary" to ensure that Afghanistan cannot become a platform for terrorists in exchange for the withdrawal of US troops.

"Everybody thinks this is unrealistic because nobody can guarantee that this is what will happen, so today's conference should tell us what we will do next ... We have to reach an agreement," Jalal said in answer to the relevant question.

The head of the diaspora center added that all participants of the two-day conference that began in Moscow earlier in the day were ready for a compromise.

"I think all parties are ready for a compromise," Jalal said.

The conference attendees include numerous prominent Afghan politicians as well as a Taliban delegation.
