UN Should Protect Venezuela's Right To Defend Against Interference - Palestinian Envoy

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 05th February, 2019) The United Nations should uphold Venezuela's right to protect itself frominterference in domestic affairs as such principle is enshrined in the charter of the organization, Riyad Mansour, the Palestinian envoy to the United Nations, told Sputnik.

On Sunday, US President Donald Trump Trump confirmed in an interview with the CBS broadcaster that US military intervention in Venezuela was "an option."

"With regard to the United Nations, there is a very important principle that is enshrined into the charter of the organization and it is to defend the right of a nation against internal interference and respect its unity and territorial integrity. Based on that, the United Nations is supposed to defend that principle," Mansour said.

The UN Security Council should oppose interference in Caracas' internal affairs as well, the envoy noted.

"In the Security Council, there was a split because there are those who had a position in the internal affairs of Venezuela and they support one side, which is not the current government of Venezuela. By that I mean the United States and there are few others that follow them in the same manner. When there was an attempt to do something in the Security Council that effort did not succeed and it should not succeed in the future," Mansour added.

On January 23, Juan Guaido, the speaker of the Venezuelan opposition-led National Assembly, proclaimed himself the country's interim president. The opposition figure was supported by the United States and a number of other countries.

Russia and China as well as several other countries have refused to support Guaido, backing Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro as the country's legitimate president and demanding that other countries respect the principle of non-interference in Venezuela's internal affairs.
