UN To Avoid Joining Any Groups Of Countries Holding Talks On Venezuela - Antonio Guterres

The United Nations will not participate in any talks by groups of nations on the crisis in Venezuela because it wants to maintain its ability to act as a neutral mediator, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told reporters on Monday

UNITED NATIONS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 04th February, 2019) The United Nations will not participate in any talks by groups of nations on the crisis in Venezuela because it wants to maintain its ability to act as a neutral mediator, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told reporters on Monday.

"The UN Secretariat has decided not to be part of any of these groups in order to give credibility to our continued offer of good offices to the parties to be able at their request to help find a political solution to the crisis," Guterres said.

He added that he has been following the evolving situation in Venezuela with "a lot of concern."

Mexico and Uruguay plan to hold a conference on Venezuela in Montevideo on February 7, bringing together officials from over 10 countries and international organizations.

Venezuela is currently facing a political crisis and large anti-government protests. Opposition leader Juan Guaido has declared himself as the country's interim president, drawing backing from the United States and a number of its allies, while other countries including Russia and China continue to support Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
