FSB Confirms Detention of Vessel Under Japanese Flag in Far East for Illegal Crabbing

The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) has confirmed the detention of a vessel sailing under the flag of Japan in Russia's Primorsky Territory in the Far East region for illegal crab fishing, the FSB said in statement on Monday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 04th February, 2019) The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) has confirmed the detention of a vessel sailing under the flag of Japan in Russia's Primorsky Territory in the Far East region for illegal crab fishing, the FSB said in statement on Monday.

On Saturday, a source in the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries told Sputnik that a vessel with a 10-man crew on board had been detained last Wednesday for allegedly illegally fishing for crab in Russia's exclusive economic zone. The boat is currently docked at the Russian Far-Eastern port city of Nakhodka. On Sunday, the NHK broadcaster reported that the crew of the vessel may have to spend some more time in Russia before the fishermen are released because most of them are yet to be questioned.

"Officers of the FSB border control department in Primorsky Territory detained a fishing boat Nishino Maru-68 in the Sea of Japan, when it was engaged in illegal fishing in Russia's exclusive economic zone," the FSB statement said.

According to the FSB, about 7.5 tonnes of live crab were found on board the vessel. The damage is estimated at over 39 million rubles ($0.6 million). At least 206 illegally placed crab traps were lifted from the water, the statement said.

The vessel was delivered to the port of Nakhodka for further investigation, the FSB confirmed.
