MANBIJ (Syria) (Pakistan Point news / Sputnik - 04th February, 2019) The Russian military police have expanded their patrol zone northeast of the Syrian town of Manbij in the province of Aleppo, reaching the town of Tall Rifat, the chief of the main directorate of the Russian Defense Ministry's military police, Lt. Gen. Vladimir Ivanovsky, said on Monday.

"Today we are working in Tall Rifat ... In fact, we have checked all observation posts and a checkpoint. The main task here is, first of all, to protect these observation posts and observe the ceasefire regime," Ivanovsky told reporters.

The military police were established within the Russian Armed Forces in 2015. They are active in Syria where they help patrol the Idlib buffer zone and the Golan Heights, as well as protect UN aid convoys.

On January 8, the military police started patrolling territories in the safe zone lying northeast of Manbij, which is located near the Turkish border. In December, the Kurdish forces surrendered Manbij to the Syrian government forces at the request of the local residents.
