UK Government Tells Universities to Help Ethnic Minority Students Succeed at Studying

The UK government said Friday it expected to see "ambitious and significant" actions by universities to improve the outcome for ethnic minority students in the next couple of years

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 01st February, 2019) The UK government said Friday it expected to see "ambitious and significant" actions by universities to improve the outcome for ethnic minority students in the next couple of years.

"It cannot be right that ethnic minority students are disproportionately dropping out of university and I want to do more to focus on student experience to help ethnic minority students succeed at university," Universities Minister Chris Skidmore was quoted as saying in the statement.

All universities will now be required to publish data on admissions and performance broken down by ethnicity, gender and socio-economic background, to shine a spotlight on those making good progress and those lagging behind.

UK auditors expect university authorities to see if ethnic minority students continue with their studies, achieve the best degree outcomes or progress into graduate jobs and explain lower proportions.

A race disparity audit found that only 56 percent of black students in the United Kingdom achieved the top two grades of degree classification in 2016-2017, compared to 80 percent of their white peers. The figures also showed that only 2 percent of academic staff were black, while low-income males remained the least likely to go to college.
