Unsung heroes: PM Imran pays tribute to polio worker Irfan

Sharing a picture with the polio worker on Twitter, the prime minister said that Irfan is one of 260,000 heroes who reach out to children with polio vaccines in extreme weather conditions.

Lahore (Pakistan Point News – 31st January, 2019) Prime Minister Imran Khan has paid tribute to polio worker Irfan whose picture had gone viral on social media.

Sharing a picture with the polio worker on Twitter, the prime minister said that Irfan is one of 260,000 heroes who reach out to children with polio vaccines in extreme weather conditions.

He added that his viral video had made everyone proud, stressing that this dedication will help Pakistan become a polio-free country.

“Irfan is one of 260,000 heroes who reach out to children with polio vaccines in extreme weather conditions. His viral video has left every individual with a sense of awe & pride. This dedication is what will enable us to achieve our goal of a polio free nation #SalamPolioWorker,” the prime minister wrote in his tweet.

Prime Minister Imran Khan had met polio workers from Swat on Wednesday whose pictures had gone viral on social media for performing their duties in deep snow.

The prime minister had lauded the polio workers on the lunch hosted for them.

As the countrywide polio immunization campaign continues in Pakistan, the Pakistani polio workers are going door to door to administer anti-polio drops to the children.

About 260,000 polio workers are participating in the drive where 39 million children under the age of five are being administered anti-polio drops.

These polio workers were seen performing their duties despite harsh weather conditions. The pictures of these unsung heroes of Pakistan went viral on social media as they travelled through deep snow to end polio endemic in the country.

Pakistan continues its fight against polio and the infectious disease is likely to be eliminated from the country by the end of this year.

Not only the Pakistani government, the World Health Organisation (WHO) and United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) have also intensified its activities in coordination with the government of Pakistan for polio eradication.
