Rally in Maduro's Support, Against Regime Change Held Near Venezuelan Embassy in Moscow

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 28th January, 2019) A rally in support of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was held near the Latin American country's embassy in Moscow on Monday, with participants speaking against any externally-inspired regime change in Venezuela, a Sputnik correspondent reported.

A rally was held as part of a meeting of a Russian State Duma member from the Liberal Democratic Party (LDPR), Boris Chernyshov, with his supporters. About 15 people took part in the rally.

"We, State Duma members, see that this is a very important moment. The moment of geopolitical activity, which may have a ripple effect on us," Chernyshov said.

According to the lawmaker, Venezuela's events are "an attempt, akin to the Ukrainian scenario, to bring absolute chaos and devastation" to the country rich in oil reserves.

The participants of the rally chanted in Spanish "Viva el presidente Maduro," after which representatives of the embassy went outside and thanked them for support.

"We are also planning to hold a protest rally near the US embassy," Chernyshov said, urging representatives of the embassy and the Venezuelan youth living in Moscow to join the future rally.

The lawmaker told Sputnik that the rally might take place next week. The party's international department will submit the relevant documents to authorize the protest action.

On January 23, the speaker of the opposition-led Venezuelan National Assembly, Juan Guaido, declared himself interim head of state amid ongoing anti-government protests. The United States and a number of other countries, which disputed last year's re-election of President Nicolas Maduro, have recognized the opposition leader. Maduro slammed Guaido as a US "puppet" and accused Washington of organizing a coup in Venezuela.

Russia, Mexico, Turkey, and Uruguay voiced their support for Maduro as the country's only legitimate president, with Moscow expressing readiness to act as a mediator in the conflict between the government and the opposition.
