BEIJING (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 28th January, 2019) The Second Intermediate People's Court in the northeastern Chinese city of Tianjin on Monday sentenced Wang Quanzhang a prominent Chinese lawyer specializing in human rights protection to four and a half years for state subversion.

The hearing in Wang's case took place behind closed doors on December 26, 2018.

"The court ruled that Wang Quanzhang was found guilty of state power subversion and sentenced to four years and six months in prison. He is also deprived of all his political rights for a period of five years," the court decision read.

Wang, along with around 200 political activists and lawyers, was detained back in 2015.

In early 2016, he faced state power subversion charges.

International rights groups have called on Beijing to release Wang.
