Syrian Opposition's Cairo Platform Says Will Meet With UN Special Envoy For Syria Jan 27

CAIRO (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 27th January, 2019) UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen will hold talks with members of the Cairo platform of the Syrian opposition later in the day, Faris Khalidi, a member of the platform, told Sputnik on Sunday.

Pedersen arrived in the Egyptian capital of Cairo on Saturday. During his visit, he is expected to meet with Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Abul Gheit and Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry.

"On Sunday, Qasem Khatib [member of the Cairo platform] and I will meet with the special envoy at a working lunch, which will be held after the special envoy's meeting with Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Abul Gheit," Khalidi said.

He specified that the opposition platform expected Pedersen to unveil the results of his meetings with the Syrian opposition that had been held in Russia, Syria, and Saudi Arabia.

Khatib told Sputnik that the Cairo platform was especially eager to learn from Pedersen about Russia's stance on the situation in Syria.

Khalidi said that during the meeting with Pedersen the members of the platform would reiterate their commitment to the UN Security Council Resolution 2254 and also emphasize the importance of creating the Syrian constitutional committee.

Khatib specified that the members of the platform would emphasize the necessity of creating security zones in Syria and also the importance of promoting Syrian refugees' repatriation.

He stressed that the Cairo platform had coordinated its agenda for talks with Pedersen with the Riyadh-based High Negotiations Committee.
