All Political Forces in Libya Should Be Reconciled in Order to Hold Elections - Lavrov

Moscow insists that imposing a date for elections in Libya will be counterproductive, since elections should be held when all political forces are reconciled, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Friday

RABAT (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 25th January, 2019) Moscow insists that imposing a date for elections in Libya will be counterproductive, since elections should be held when all political forces are reconciled, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Friday.

At a press conference following talks with his Moroccan counterpart, Lavrov said that both Moscow and Rabat believed that "all the Libyan political forces should come to an agreement on necessity to make a decision."

"We have repeatedly acknowledged the counterproductivity of imposing artificial dates for this or that event. Libyan elections have already been announced after a meeting in Paris last May, they were scheduled for December, but it turned out to be unrealistic," Lavrov said.

The minister emphasized that it was necessary to agree about "the rules of the game" before launching the process of political settlement.

"Russia works with all the political groups in Libya ... The aim is challenging, and I do not think that we should prioritize just defining a new [election] date," Lavrov said.
