Los Angeles Teachers' Strike to Continue on Tuesday Despite Progress in Talks

Teachers of the United States' second largest school district, Los Angeles Unified, are expected to continue their strike on Tuesday, despite progress in talks with local authorities, because even if the sides reached an agreement, the teachers would still need time to vote on it, the United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA) union said

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 22nd January, 2019) Teachers of the United States' second largest school district, Los Angeles Unified, are expected to continue their strike on Tuesday, despite progress in talks with local authorities, because even if the sides reached an agreement, the teachers would still need time to vote on it, the United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA) union said.

"We are making progress [in the talks] but whether or not we reach an agreement late tonight, everyone should report to picket lines as usual Tuesday morning. We will need to ratify the TA [temporary agreement] before we end the strike," UTLA said via its official Twitter account late on Monday.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, who serves as a mediator in the talks, confirmed that the sides had made significant progress in the negotiations since they began on Thursday.

"We've been working tirelessly to reach an agreement & have made tremendous progress with 5 days & 50+ hours of negotiation. The parties are at the table & I am optimistic that we have the momentum to take the final steps toward bringing teachers & young people back to classrooms," Garcetti said via his official Twitter feed.

The strike was called by more than 30,000 Los Angeles public school teachers on January 14 and reportedly became the first demonstration of its kind in the city in 30 years. The protesters demand higher wages, a reduced workload and more respect for public schools.
