US Relies On Nuclear Deterrence To Counter Russian ICBM Capabilities - Defense Review

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 17th January, 2019) The United States depends on nuclear deterrence to address Russian and Chinese intercontinental ballistic missile capabilities, the US Department of Defense said in its 2019 Missile Defense Review on Thursday.

"The United States relies on nuclear deterrence to address the large and more sophisticated Russian and Chinese intercontinental ballistic missile capabilities, as well as to deter attacks from any source consistent with long-standing US declaratory policy," the document said.

US missile defense capabilities will be sized in order to provide "continuing effective protection" of the United States, the document noted.

"While the United States relies on deterrence ... US active missile defense can and must outpace existing and potential rogue state offensive missile capabilities," the document said.

To do so, the United States will pursue advanced missile defense concepts and technologies for homeland defense, the document added.
