London Mayor Sadiq Khan has extended his condolences to the family and friends of Gdansk Mayor Pawel Adamowicz, who died on Monday from injures he sustained in a knife attack
MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 14th January, 2019) London Mayor Sadiq Khan has extended his condolences to the family and friends of Gdansk Mayor Pawel Adamowicz, who died on Monday from injures he sustained in a knife attack."Devastating loss for the people of Gdansk, for Mayor Adamowicz's friends and family and for all of us who value public service, progressive politics and open, accessible democracy. London's thoughts, prayers and solidarity are with Gdansk on this sad day," the mayor's statement on Twitter said.
Adamowicz was stabbed by a 27-year-old man during a charity concert late on Sunday. After the attack, the mayor underwent a five-hour surgery, but eventually succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
The suspect was released from prison in December after serving a 5.5-year sentence for robbing banks. A representative of the Polish penitentiary service told Sputnik that the suspect had mental health problems, which were discovered while he was in prison, but nevertheless served out the rest of his sentence.
The attacker's motives have not been officially revealed yet.
