UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt summoned on Monday Iranian Ambassador to the United Kingdom Hamid Baeidinejad to demand immediate access to healthcare for detained dual citizen Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe
MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 14th January, 2019) UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt summoned on Monday Iranian Ambassador to the United Kingdom Hamid Baeidinejad to demand immediate access to healthcare for detained dual citizen Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe.Zaghari-Ratcliffe, who has both UK and Iranian passports, has been under arrest in Iran since April 2016 over allegedly plotting against the government. In September last year, she was sentenced to five years in prison.
"Today I summoned the Iranian Ambassador to demand Nazanin has immediate access to the healthcare she requires. Her ongoing detention is TOTALLY unacceptable and her treatment at the hands of Iranian authorities is a fundamental breach of human rights," Hunt wrote on Twitter.
Hunt also said that he would meet later on Monday with Nazanin's husband Richard Ratcliffe.
"We all have Nazanin high in our thoughts as she starts her hunger strike today. It is a truly terrible indictment of Iran's approach that she feels she needs to resort to such an ordeal. Iran must take action now #freeNazanin," the foreign secretary added.
The UK Foreign Office has recently recommended the holders of dual UK-Iranian citizenship to avoid visits to Iran.
