'Yellow Vest' Protesters Reach Arc de Triomphe After 3-Hour March in Paris

PARIS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 12th January, 2019) "Yellow Vests" have reached the Arc de Triomphe in central Paris after marching through the French capital for three hours in a new round of protests, a Sputnik correspondent reported on Saturday.

The protesters gathered at 11:00 a.m. local time (10:00 GMT) outside the French Economy and Finance Ministry located in the 12th arrondissement of Paris, marched through the city and reached the Arc de Triomphe by 2:00 p.m.

Apparently, there were no incidents during the march. Demonstrations are also planned in other French cities, including Bordeaux, Toulouse, Marseille and Nantes.

On Monday, French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said that the French authorities have decided to increase the number of law enforcement officers who will keep order on January 12, and would mobilize 80,000 law enforcement officers across the country.

The wave of the so-called yellow vest protests named after the obligatory attribute of French cars started in mid-November. While the French government has scrapped its planned hike in diesel taxes, which is what initially sparked the protests, the yellow vests have evolved into a broader movement against government policies and rising living costs. The rallies have been marked by violent clashes between protesters and the police.
