UN Welcomes Russian, Turkish Efforts To Maintain Stability In Idlib - Spokesman

UNITED NATIONS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 12th January, 2019) United Nations' Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pederson welcomed Russian and Turkish efforts to promote stability in Idlib, UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said in a press briefing on Friday.

"He [Pederson] said he was pleased to hear from Russia and Turkey on their sustained commitment to maintaining stability in Idlib," Dujarric said.

Pederson made his remarks at a meeting with the International Syria Support Group task forces on Thursday where the parties addressed humanitarian issues in Rukban, Idlib, and the northeast region, Dujarric added. The special envoy expressed deep concern regarding the attacks on humanitarian personnel in Syria.

During the talks in Sochi on September 17, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish Recep Tayyip Erdogan agreed to set up a demilitarized zone in Idlib along the contact line between the armed opposition and the government forces.

Syria has been in a state of civil war since 2011 with the government forces fighting against numerous opposition groups and militant and terrorist organizations. Russia, along with Turkey and Iran, is a guarantor of the ceasefire regime in Syria. Moscow has also been providing humanitarian aid to residents of the crisis-torn country.
