India Continues Buying Oil From Iran Despite US Calls for Phaseout

India continues to buy crude oil from Iran and has been in contact with both Iranian and US officials after Washington reimposed sanctions on Tehran, the Indian Foreign Ministry spokesman said Friday

NEW DELHI (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 11th January, 2019) India continues to buy crude oil from Iran and has been in contact with both Iranian and US officials after Washington reimposed sanctions on Tehran, the Indian Foreign Ministry spokesman said Friday.

The US administration gave eight countries, including India, 180 days in November to phase out their purchases after pulling out of a nuclear treaty it predecessors helped sign in 2015.

"India continues to import oil from Iran. We have got a waiver in this regard and we will continue to be engaged with all stakeholders as far as matters leading to India's energy security is concerned," Raveesh Kumar told reporters.

He said India had had several rounds of meetings with Iran and other nations on crude purchases. An Indian Foreign Ministry source told Sputnik earlier that Washington wanted the South Asian country to cut Iran imports to 9 million barrels a month.
