World Wildlife Fund Says Helped Russia Set Up 140 Protected Areas Over 25 Years

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 11th January, 2019) The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) assisted Russia in setting up 140 designated conservation areas of various levels over the past 25 years, the Russian branch of the fund said on Friday.

"Today, the Russian conservation system celebrates its 102nd anniversary since its foundation and the 25th [anniversary] - together with WWF Russia, which has been working on preserving wilderness for a quarter of a century. In the course of these years, 140 designated conservation areas of various levels have been created, with a total size of over 54 million hectares [133 million acres], which is more than the size of Germany," the fund said in a statement.

There are currently 110 natural reserves, 56 national parks, 60 Federal wildfire areas and around 12,000 other protected areas in Russia.
