Presidential Election in Slovakia Scheduled for March 16 - Parliament

Slovakia will have its presidential election on March 16, with a second round planned for March 30, if needed, a statement published on the Slovakian parliament's website said on Thursday

Prague (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 10th January, 2019) Slovakia will have its presidential election on March 16, with a second round planned for March 30, if needed, a statement published on the Slovakian parliament's website said on Thursday.

"The first round of the Slovakian leader's election will be held on March 16 this year, while the second round, if necessary, [will be held] two weeks later, on March 30," the statement read.

According to the country's election procedures, a candidate must receive over 50 percent of the vote in order to be elected in the first round. If no candidate gets a majority, the two who polled the highest will compete in a runoff.

Slovakia's incumbent president, Andrej Kiska, has said he would not seek re-election. However, Vice-President of the European Commission in charge of Energy Union Maros Sefcovic has been considering running for presidency since being offered to represent the Direction - Social Democracy party. If the offer is accepted, Sefcovic would be considered the main candidate for the presidency.

Speaker of Slovak parliament and head of Slovak National Party Andrej Danko said on Wednesday that his possible bid depended on his party. Last month, Danko said that even if he ran, his campaign would be passive.

Intentions to run in he presidential election were also voiced by the leader of the Hungarian minority and the head of Most-Hid party, Bela Bugar; leader of far-right People's Party Our Slovakia Marian Kotleba; as well as Chief Justice of the Slovakian Supreme Court Stefan Garabin.
