US to Pull Troops From Syria, But to Keep Fighting IS Presenting 'Real' Threat - Pompeo

The United States remains committed to fighting the Islamic State terrorist group (IS, ISIS, banned in Russia), which remains a "real" threat, but intends to proceed with pulling its troops out of Syria, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Thursday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 10th January, 2019) The United States remains committed to fighting the Islamic State terrorist group (IS, ISIS, banned in Russia), which remains a "real" threat, but intends to proceed with pulling its troops out of Syria, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Thursday.

On December 19, the White House announced the United States would withdraw all 2,000 troops from Syria within 60 to 100 days.

"The threat from radical Islamic terrorism is real. ISIS continues, we fight them in many regions around the country. Our commitment to continuing to prevent Daesh [another name for IS] growth ... is real ... We will continue at that. We're going to do it, in a way, in one particular place Syria differently. The United States' decision, President [Donald] Trump's decision, to withdraw our troops has been made. We will do that," Pompeo said at a press conference in Egypt.

The US secretary of state stressed that there was no contradiction between US decision to withdraw forces from Syria and its intention to continue its "crushing campaign" against terrorists.
