UN Secretary-General (UNSG) Antonio Guterres has called on all the parties concerned to refrain from violence following the announcement of the results of the presidential election in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said in a statement

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 10th January, 2019) UN Secretary-General (UNSG) Antonio Guterres has called on all the parties concerned to refrain from violence following the announcement of the results of the presidential election in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said in a statement.

According to the National Electoral Commission (CENI) of the DRC, opposition presidential candidate Felix Tshisekedi won the election.

"The Secretary-General calls on all stakeholders to refrain from violence and to channel any eventual electoral disputes through the established institutional mechanisms in line with the Democratic Republic of the Congo's Constitution and relevant electoral laws," Dujarric said in Thursday's statement.

Guterres expressed hope that the CENI, the Constitutional Court, the government, political parties and civil society would fulfill their obligations to uphold democratic norms in the DRC.

The long-anticipated vote was held on December 30. It was preceded by violent protests in several regions of the DRC which erupted in the wake of the CENI's decision to put off the election due to the outbreak of Ebola and activities of militant groups there.
