DR Congo Opposition Politician Tshisekedi Wins Presidential Vote - Electoral Commission

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 10th January, 2019) Opposition presidential candidate Felix Tshisekedi had won the election in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo), the country's National Electoral Commission (CENI) said on Thursday.

"Mr. Felix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo was elected the president of the Democratic Republic of the Congo," the commission wrote on Twitter.

According to the official figures, Tshisekedi, the leader of the country's largest opposition party the Union for Democracy and Social Progress received 38.57 percent of the votes or 7,051,013 ballots, bringing an end to the government of President Joseph Kabila, who has been in power since 2001.

Businessman Martin Fayulu secured 34.83 percent of the votes or 6,366,732 of ballots. Media have reported that Fayulu has refused to recognize the results of the election.

The ruling coalition's candidate, Emmanuel Shadary, garnered 23,84 percent of the ballots, supported by 4,357,359 voters.

The voter turnout at the election was 47.56 percent.

The long-anticipated vote was held on December 30. It was preceded by violent protests in several regions of DR Congo which erupted in the wake of the CENI's decision to put off the election due to the outbreak of Ebola and activities of militant groups there.
