President of European Council Calls for Release of Canadian Citizens Detained in China

President of the European Council Donald Tusk called for the release of Canadian nationals detained in China on Wednesday following phone talks with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 09th January, 2019) President of the European Council Donald Tusk called for the release of Canadian nationals detained in China on Wednesday following phone talks with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

"Good phone call with PM @JustinTrudeau. Both Canada and EU stand by the rule of law underpinning the global order. EU calls for the release of the Canadian citizens detained in China," Tusk wrote on Twitter.

Canadian-Chinese relations have worsened after the arrest of Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of Chinese high-tech giant Huawei, in Vancouver in December at the request of the US authorities on suspicions of violating Washington's Iran sanctions. The move was slammed by Beijing which called on Ottawa to release the official.

On December 10, the Chinese authorities detained ex-diplomat Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, both Canadian citizens, on charges of threatening national security.
