Health Condition of Jailed Ex-Pakistani Prime Minister Sharif Worsens - Reports

The health condition of former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who is currently serving his term for corruption in a prison in the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore, has worsened, local media reported on Tuesday, citing unnamed sources.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 08th January, 2019) The health condition of former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who is currently serving his term for corruption in a prison in the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore, has worsened, local media reported on Tuesday, citing unnamed sources.

In late December 2018, an anti-corruption court in the country's capital of Islamabad found Sharif guilty in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills corruption case and sentenced him to a $2.5-million fine and seven years in jail. Sharif is serving his term in Lahore's Kot Lakhpat prison.

Sources told the Geo tv broadcaster that Sharif, aged 69, was suffering from body aches and high fever.

A medical team would examine Sharif, while the former Pakistani leader had been rejected to have his personal physician visiting him in jail.

Sharif has a heart condition and underwent an open heart surgery three years ago.

A week ago, Sharif appealed the court decision, claiming that it was based on a misinterpretation of the law and that the sentence was passed without consideration of the defense lawyers' arguments.

In July 2017, Sharif was removed from office after the release of the so-called Panama papers, which indicated that his children owned offshore accounts in the British Virgin Islands and expensive property in London.

Sharif served as Pakistani prime minister three times: in 1990-1993, in 1997-1999, and in 2013-2017.
