Mayor of Latvian Ventspils Calls on Prime Ministerial Candidate to Renounce US Citizenship

Krisjanis Karins, a Latvian prime ministerial candidate, should renounce his US citizenship, Aivars Lembergs, the mayor of the northwestern Latvian town of Ventspils and one of the richest people in the country, told reporters on Tuesday.

RIGA (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 08th January, 2019) Krisjanis Karins, a Latvian prime ministerial candidate, should renounce his US citizenship, Aivars Lembergs, the mayor of the northwestern Latvian town of Ventspils and one of the richest people in the country, told reporters on Tuesday.

On Monday, Latvian President Raimonds Vejonis nominated Karins, a member of the center-right New Union party, as a prime ministerial candidate, tasking him to form a new government.

"A foreigner who has a double citizenship will rule over Latvia. He can escape to his fatherland at any time. This is blasphemy! First of all, he should select one citizenship that of his country," Lembergs said.

Karins, aged 54, was born and raised in the United States. He moved to Latvia in 1994.

He suggests forming a government of five parties: his New Unity party, the New Conservative Party, populist 'Who owns the state?' party, liberal For Latvia's Development party, and national-conservative National Alliance party.

This will be the third attempt to form the new government. While the parliamentary elections in the country were held on October 6, 2018, no progress has been made since then in the new government formation.
