French Police Detained Man Suspected of Attacking Officers During Paris Protests- Minister

The French police have detained a man, suspected of attacking gendarmes during the "yellow vest" protests in Paris on January 5, France's Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said on Monday.

PARIS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 07th January, 2019) The French police have detained a man, suspected of attacking gendarmes during the "yellow vest" protests in Paris on January 5, France's Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said on Monday.

Thousands of people took to the streets of several French cities on Saturday and Sunday, in the eighth consecutive weekend of protests against high living costs. Some 3,500 protesters took to the streets of Paris on Saturday. A suspect was filmed punching a police officer during the demonstration on a bridge in the French capital. The suspect reportedly is former heavyweight professional boxer Christophe Dettinger.

"The individual who violently attacked on Saturday mobile gendarmes on Senghor footbridge turned up to investigators of the Paris territorial security department. He was immediately remanded in custody and will have to be held accountable for his actions before the justice," Castaner wrote on Twitter.

The wave of the so-called yellow vest protests named after the obligatory attribute of French drivers started in mid-November. While the French government has scrapped its planned hike in diesel taxes, which is what initially sparked the protests, the "yellow vest" demonstrations have evolved into a broader movement against government policies and rising living costs. The rallies have been marked by violent clashes between protesters and the police.
