CAIRO (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 29th December, 2018) Egyptian security forces have killed 40 extremists in the Egyptian capital's Giza area and in the north of the Sinai Peninsula who were involved in or planning a series of attacks on civilian, tourist sites and security forces following a bus explosion in Giza, the Egyptian Interior Ministry said Saturday.

According to the ministry's statement, 30 militants were killed in Cairo and its outskirts, while another ten were eliminated in the city of Arish in northern Sinai. The ministry did not specify whether the eliminated criminals were implicated in the blast that hit a tourist bus the day prior in the Giza district.

Three tourists and one Egyptian national, their guide, were killed as an improvised explosive device blast hit their bus 2.5 miles from the Giza pyramids. Moreover, 11 other tourists and the bus driver were injured in the incident. Egyptian investigators have launched a probe into the case.

The Egyptian security forces have been fighting militant insurgency on the Sinai Peninsula since 2011. The insurgency was prompted by the turmoil caused by the Egyptian revolution and the overthrow of then-President Hosni Mubarak.
