Barrier Installed At Russian-Ukrainian Border In Crimea - Russian Security Service

SIMFEROPOL (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 28th December, 2018) The construction of a barrier and the adjustment of a complex alarm system at the Russian-Ukrainian border in the north of Crimea has been completed, the spokesperson of the Crimean border department of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) told Sputnik.

"The planned construction of a barrier of engineer and technical facilities and the adjustment of a complex system of alarm sensors in the area of the Isthmus of Perekop has been completed," the spokesperson said.

The designing of the barrier began back in 2015.

It consists of several types of fences the total length of which is over 60 kilometers. They are equipped with hundreds of sensors and video surveillance devices for controlling the area both during the day and in the night time.

Moreover, two alarm systems are set up at the border. The spokesperson said that similar systems had been installed for protecting the Russian border in the north and the Far East.

"The use of the security complexes on the Crimean part of the border is required due to a number of threats, including attempts to cross into Crimea by special forces and reconnaissance groups from the neighboring state," the spokesperson pointed out.

The official added that the barrier would help prevent the establishment of channels for smuggling weapons, munitions, drugs, fuel, tobacco and alcohol by Ukrainian citizens into Crimea.

Crimea rejoined Russia in 2014 as a result of a referendum at which over 96 percent of the peninsula's residents backed the option.
