Ukraine's Security Service Says Opened Criminal Case Into Broadcasting of RT Programs

The Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) has launched a criminal case against an Internet service provider in the country's west-central Vinnytsya Region for broadcasting programs of the RT broadcaster and other Russian TV channels, the SBU press service said on Monday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 24th December, 2018) The Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) has launched a criminal case against an internet service provider in the country's west-central Vinnytsya Region for broadcasting programs of the RT broadcaster and other Russian tv channels, the SBU press service said on Monday.

"A private enterprise without a license from the Ukrainian National Council of Television and Radio Broadcasting provided its clients with the IPTV [Internet Protocol television] service. Russian propaganda channels, including Russia Today [RT], banned from broadcasting in Ukraine, were among the TV channels the [company] offered to its clients," the press service said, adding that the SBU had opened a criminal case under the article which envisages a maximum penalty of six years in prison.

This is not the first time when Kiev has limited the operation of Russian media in Ukraine. In March 2015, Kiev suspended the accreditation of 115 Russian information media with the Ukrainian authorities. The broadcasting of major Russian TV channels has also been prohibited in Ukraine.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has called Ukraine's measures an attack on media freedom, calling on the Council of Europe and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe to condemn Kiev's policies that targeted the Russian media.
