Canadian Foreign Minister Demands China Release Canadians Held In 'Arbitrary Detention'

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 22nd December, 2018) Canada is calling on China to immediately release two Canadians it has in arbitrary detention, Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Chrystia Freeland said in a press release.

"We are deeply concerned by the arbitrary detention by Chinese authorities of two Canadians earlier this month and call for their immediate release," Freeland said in the release on Friday.

Canadian citizens Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor are currently being held in detention by Chinese authorities.

Kovrig is a former Canadian diplomat who is currently working for the International Crisis Group in China. He was detained on December 10.

Spavor was the founder of a China-based company that carries out cultural exchanges with North Korea. He was reportedly acquainted with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Moreover, Freeland said Canada is conducting a fair, unbiased and transparent legal proceeding with respect to Huawei Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou.

Meng was arrested in Vancouver earlier in December at the request of the US authorities on suspicions of violating the United States' imposed on Iran. The move was slammed by Beijing which called on Ottawa to release the official.
