The protesters are trying to break through the police cordon to Llotja de Mar palace where the Spanish cabinet is holding a meeting.
The most violent protesters have been turning over garbage cans and pulling out traffic light poles.
According to local media, members of Catalan pro-independence Committees for the Defense of the Republic (CDR) are participating in mass rallies.
Earlier in the day, local law enforcement agencies reported that protests were being held across Catalonia.
