Russia, Turkey Maintain Regular Working Contacts on Idlib - Foreign Ministry

Russia and Turkey maintain regular working contacts on the situation in Syrian Idlib, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 19th December, 2018) Russia and Turkey maintain regular working contacts on the situation in Syrian Idlib, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Wednesday.

According to Zakharova, to discuss the situation in Idlib, Russia and Turkey hold regular meetings at various levels, including at the level of foreign ministers, special representatives and heads of states. These discussions are necessary because the history of the Syrian settlement is much more complex than a deliberately drawn plan, Zakharova said.

"Maintenance of contacts is not just a diplomatic time check, because we talk about regular working contacts between diplomats, military experts as well as exchanges of delegations. All possible types of contacts are designed to bring the positions as close as possible where we really have common approaches, and to do everything to find a common denominator for those issues that remain problematic," Zakharova said at a briefing.

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem earlier said that the liberation of Idlib from terrorists is a priority task for Damascus, adding that the Syrian leadership coordinates this issue with Moscow.

Russian Special Presidential Envoy for Syria Alexander Lavrentyev said in November that about 15,000 militants of Nusra Front terrorist group (banned in Russia) are still in Syria's Idlib. There are also over a dozen of other armed groups operating in the province.

On September 17, Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan agreed at talks in the Russian resort city of Sochi to set up a demilitarized zone in Idlib along the contact line of the armed opposition and the government forces.
