Russian Prime Minister Orders to Develop Project to Build 4 Gas-Fueled Icebreakers

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has ordered the Ministry of Industry and Trade, United Shipbuilding Corporation, Zvezda shipbuilding complex, Rosatom nuclear corporation and Novatek gas giant to develop a project on construction of four gas-fueled icebreakers, the Russian government said on Wednesday in a statement.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 19th December, 2018) Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has ordered the Ministry of Industry and Trade, United Shipbuilding Corporation, Zvezda shipbuilding complex, Rosatom nuclear corporation and Novatek gas giant to develop a project on construction of four gas-fueled icebreakers, the Russian government said on Wednesday in a statement.

Medvedev signed the order after a meeting on development of the Arctic region that was held in the Russian Arctic town of Sabetta on December 11.

"[I order] the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Zvezda shipbuilding complex, Rosatom corporation and Novatek to develop a project of construction of four icebreakers powered by natural gas engines given the need to put them into service until 2023, taking into consideration initiatives of shipyards, timeline [for implementation] and costs of construction. [I also order] to inform the Russian government about the results [of the work]," the statement said.

The results of the work must be presented to the government on March 1, 2019.
