WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 14th December, 2018) The conclusion of the Yemen consultations in Sweden between the Yemeni government and Houthis is an important first step to peace, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a press release.
"Although many details remain subject to further discussion, these consultations between the Republic of Yemen Government and the Houthis marked a pivotal first step," Pompeo said on Thursday.
Pompeo highlighted progress on key initiatives including a cease-fire and withdrawal of forces in Hudaydah, prisoner exchanges, and opening humanitarian corridors to the city of Taiz.
All parties in the conflict must continue to engage, de-escalate tensions and cease ongoing hostilities in order to give the consultations a chance to succeed, Pompeo said.
Earlier in the day, the US Senate passed a resolution calling for a diplomatic solution to the conflict in Yemen and supports an end to US air-to-air refueling of Saudi-led coalition aircraft in Yemen.
