The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka declared unconstitutional the decision of President Maithripala Sirisena to dissolve the parliament, local media said Thursday.

According to news First channel, the board of seven justices unanimously recognized that the head of state violated the constitution and canceled the effect of his decree.

On November 26, Sirisena removed Sri Lanka Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and appointed former president Mahinda Rajapaksa in his place. After the parliament did not support Rajapaksa, Sirisena dissolved it on November 9 and announced the next elections to be held on January 5, 2019.
