Tory Lawmaker Denies UK's May Won Back DUP Support

UK Prime Minister Theresa May remains at odds with her minority government allies from the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), Tory lawmaker Andrea Jenkyns said Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 12th December, 2018) UK Prime Minister Theresa May remains at odds with her minority government allies from the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), Tory lawmaker Andrea Jenkyns said Wednesday.

May spoke to her party's parliamentary group, the 1922 Committee, ahead of their vote of no confidence in her. She reportedly said the DUP stood by her.

"In the 1922 Theresa May stated that the DUP are supporting her. I have spoken with the DUP and they have told me she is categorically mistaken. They do not support her," Jenkyns, a Conservative member of parliament for Morley and Outwood, tweeted.

DUP deputy leader Nigel Dodds confirmed to Sky news that no significant progress had been made Wednesday between the prime minister and the Northern Irish party.

The DUP were angered by the fact that the backstop arrangement to avoid a hard border on the island of Ireland had made it into the final Brexit plan despite May's promise that the region would not be treated differently from the rest of the Kingdom.
